The Further Info URL

Each CMIP6 netCDF file contains an attribute called “further_info_URL” which is the URL of a landing page from which all of the relevant documentation relevant to the data may be accessed. This landing page will describe the ensemble for which the simulation was run and will contain links to documentation for the ensemble’s experiment,  the simulation itself and any other simulations that the ensemble may contain. Each Simulation document will contain a link to the description of the model that ran it.

URL name

The URL will will have the following format:

http://furtherinfo.es-doc.org/MIP_ERA.INSTITUTION_ID.SOURCE_ID.EXPERIMENT_ID.SUB_EXPERIMENT_ID. VARIANT_LABEL

where
  • MIP_ERA is the activity’s associated CMIP cycle (e.g. CMIP6)
  • INSTITUTION_ID is the institution identifier (e.g. IPSL)
  • SOURCE_ID is the model identifier (e.g. GFDL-CM2-1)
  • EXPERIMENT_ID is the root experiment identifier (e.g. abrupt4xCO2)
  • SUB_EXPERIMENT_ID is the sub-experiment identifier (e.g. s1965). In the common case of no sub-experiment this will be “none”.
  • VARIANT_LABEL is a label constructed from 4 indices describing the position of an individual simulation within the ensemble for the experiment (e.g. r3i1p2f17 denotes the simulation of  created by the combination of the 3rd realization, the 1st initialization the second physics and the 17th forcing methods.) Note that URLs which differ only by their “ripf” components will all point to the same landing page.

A complete example could be

http://furtherinfo.es-doc.org/CMIP6.IPSL.IPSL-CM6A-LR.abrupt-4xCO2.none.r1i1p1f1

Landing page content

When visited, the further_info_URL will display a landing page with the following content:

  •  A link to the institute’s general homepage
  • A link to the description of the experiment
  • A link to the scientific description of the model which created the ensemble
  • A link to a description of the ensemble
    • A link to the institute’s own ensemble documentation page
    • A link to dataset errata information for the ensemble
    • A link to dataset citation information for the ensemble
    • A link to the performance document for the ensemble (a description of how the model simulation performed on a particular machine)
    • A link to the ensemble datasets in the ESGF archive

For now sub_experiment ID and variant_label are not used in the links resolved above (coarser granuality).
